Yongin City Re-enrolls in 'Citizen Safety Insurance' After 3-Year Suspension

From This Month, Up to 20 Million KRW for 14 Items
'Sanghae' Added... Compensation for Injuries When Using Public Transportation

Yongin City in Gyeonggi Province will resume operating its citizen safety insurance, which had been suspended for three years, starting from the 1st. In particular, the newly operated insurance has established coverage for 'injuries' to enhance its effectiveness.

Yongin City announced on the 1st that it will operate the 'Yongin Citizen Safety Insurance' from this month to help stabilize the lives of citizens who suffer death or injury due to natural disasters or accidents.

Yongin City Re-enrolls in 'Citizen Safety Insurance' After 3-Year Suspension

Mayor Lee Sang-il of Yongin said, "We decided to expand the citizen safety insurance as a social safety net so that vulnerable neighbors can quickly recover their daily lives when citizens suffer damage from natural disasters, social disasters, or various incidents and accidents."

Previously, the city operated citizen safety insurance until 2020, but judged it to be ineffective and suspended the related project for three years from the following year until last year.

With this operation of citizen safety insurance, any citizen residing in Yongin for one year will be able to receive compensation without any separate subscription procedures. Registered foreigners and overseas Koreans who have reported their residence to the city are also included.

The coverage items include 14 types: ▲natural disasters ▲social disasters ▲injuries ▲explosions, fires, collapses, landslides ▲death or permanent disability while using public transportation ▲sexual violence crime injury compensation ▲injury diagnosis lump sum payment ▲school zone traffic accident injury treatment costs ▲elderly protection zone traffic accident injury treatment costs, among others.

In cases of death caused by natural disasters such as typhoons, floods, droughts, or social disasters such as fires and collapses, or injuries (excluding traffic injuries), compensation of up to 20 million KRW is provided. However, those under 15 years old are excluded. If permanent disability occurs due to the same reasons, compensation ranging from 5 million to 10 million KRW is provided regardless of age, depending on the degree of disability.

The city explained that the reason for establishing a separate category for 'explosions, fires, collapses, and landslides' apart from 'social disasters' is to reduce the burden of treatment costs when citizens are injured in small-scale accidents such as household or public facility fires and explosions that occur in daily life.

In particular, the city expanded the scope of coverage by newly establishing the 'injury' category in the newly operated insurance. 'Injury' refers to cases where death or permanent disability occurs due to various accidents that commonly happen at home or workplace, such as falling or dropping objects. Injury coverage overlaps with 'explosions, fires, collapses, and landslides' coverage (excluding traffic accidents).

However, if children aged 12 or younger are injured in traffic accidents in child protection zones, or seniors aged 65 or older are injured in elderly protection zones, up to 10 million KRW in injury treatment costs will be supported. Additionally, if they suffer injuries other than traffic accidents and receive a diagnosis for more than four weeks, a consolation payment of 100,000 KRW will be provided.

Compensation is also provided for injuries sustained while using public transportation. Up to 10 million KRW in compensation is paid, and accidents occurring not only during boarding but also during getting on or off and while waiting at stations are covered.

Furthermore, citizens who suffer injuries from sexual violence requiring treatment for more than a month will receive compensation of up to 10 million KRW.

Meanwhile, citizen safety insurance applies regardless of the location of the accident. Coverage is available for up to three years from the date of the accident, and compensation is provided independently of personal insurance subscriptions or government disaster relief funds.
