Yeongyang-gun, Gyeongbuk Province, held the '2024 Foreign Seasonal Worker Farm Briefing Session' on the 30th at the Yeongyang Culture and Sports Center for farms applying for foreign seasonal workers.
This briefing session explained this year's project implementation plan, procedures according to the Ministry of Justice guidelines, employer compliance requirements, and other information, with about 250 farm owners applying for the foreign seasonal worker program attending.
To address labor shortages caused by rural aging and population decline, Yeongyang-gun began with signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for agricultural workforce dispatch with Huafang County, Vietnam, in 2016, and welcomed the first foreign seasonal workers in 2017. Up to last year, a total of 1,546 workers participated in the program across 567 farms, significantly contributing to resolving labor shortages during busy farming seasons and stabilizing labor costs.
This year, the number of foreign seasonal workers introduced to Yeongyang-gun increased by more than 40% compared to the previous year, totaling 936 workers. These workers can stay for up to eight months, providing great support to local farms struggling with labor shortages.
County Governor Oh Do-chang stated, “This year, we will also promote the foreign seasonal worker program early to resolve labor shortages on farms and actively diversify the countries of origin to secure stable manpower.” He added, “We ask farms to comply with related regulations and work together to improve worker treatment so that this program can continue to expand and develop.”
