Gyeonggi-do Develops Design for 'Integrated Signpost National Point Number Plate'

Gyeonggi-do Develops Design for 'Integrated Signpost National Point Number Plate' Appearance after installation of integrated national point number sign with Gyeonggi-do direction sign

Gyeonggi Province has developed a 'Directional Sign Integrated National Point Number Plate Design' that can provide rapid location guidance in emergency situations such as disasters or accidents on hiking trails and walking paths.

On the 31st, Gyeonggi Province announced that it plans to produce and distribute the 'Gyeonggi Province Directional Sign Integrated National Point Number Plate Installation Manual' to 31 cities and counties.

The National Point Number is a location identification number assigned to each point divided by a 10-meter horizontal and vertical grid across the entire national territory (e.g., Dasa 98378411). It is address information jointly used with rescue and emergency services for quick location guidance and life-saving during emergencies on hiking trails and other areas. As of 2022, about 74,000 have been installed nationwide.

However, until now, the national point number plates have only been regulated as horizontal and vertical types under the Road Name Address Act, so each local government either attached number plates to existing directional signs or individually installed posts with number plates (post type). From the general public’s perspective, these were perceived as survey points established by the government, resulting in low interest, and had drawbacks such as damage to natural scenery and poor visibility.

In contrast, the Directional Sign Integrated National Point Number Plate developed by Gyeonggi Province allows anyone to intuitively understand and use the sign’s purpose by displaying the national point number along with the current location number. Additionally, the customized design preserves the natural scenery and improves visibility by installing on three sides. Compared to the individually installed post type, it also reduces installation costs by about 520,000 KRW per unit.

Gyeonggi Province explained that it developed this design by utilizing the regulation that allows different specifications when the national point number is marked as part of a facility.

Lee Jung-su, Director of the Garden Industry Division of Gyeonggi Province, said, "With the distribution of this manual, we expect to contribute to creating a safer Gyeonggi Province, preserve natural scenery, and reduce the budget for number plate installation and maintenance. We will continue to do our best to realize a safe Gyeonggi Province."
