Safety Concerns for Half of Previously Constructed Bridge
Military: "Diagnosis First... Full Reconstruction Also Considered"
In Gangjin-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Kang Jin-won), half of the newly constructed Chunjeon Indo Bridge collapsed. There are concerns about additional collapse as the remaining half of the bridge was constructed using the same method.
According to Gangjin-gun on the 30th, since 2018, a budget of approximately 24 billion won has been invested in the "Gangjincheon Local Stream Maintenance Project" covering the Seosan-ri to Hakmyeong-ri area in Gangjin-eup.

However, in December last year, part of the bridge connecting Seosan-ri and Hakmyeong-ri in Gangjin-eup, Gangjin-gun, collapsed during construction. Although the other half remains, concerns have been raised because it was constructed using the same method.
In particular, investigative results have heightened anxiety as there are suspicions that the collapsed half was constructed differently from the original design.
The cause of the collapse is presumed to be that the structure was designed using a patented method involving unit girders, concrete structures placed on top and connected, but the concrete was directly poured, causing it to be unable to bear the weight.
Since the remaining deck was constructed in the same way and safety cannot be guaranteed, there is a consensus that a complete reconstruction is necessary.
Regarding this, a Gangjin-gun official stated, “We have requested a safety inspection. The direction of the construction will be decided based on the results. We cannot accept partial reinforcement methods for the remaining bridge. It seems that a full reconstruction will be necessary.”
