China's First Generative AI Chatbot
Surpassed 100 Million Users Last December
Used for Real-Time Call Interpretation, Text Translation, and More
The artificial intelligence (AI) service in the Galaxy S24 smartphone series for China will feature Baidu instead of Google.
According to Bloomberg on the 29th (local time), Baidu's AI service, "Ernie Bot," will be integrated into the Galaxy S24 series released in China, providing real-time call translation, text translation, and note summarization functions. It will also support the backend for the "Circle to Search" feature, which allows users to draw a circle on the phone screen to check search results.

Baidu's "Ernie Bot" is China's first generative AI chatbot developed to compete with OpenAI's ChatGPT, and as of December last year, it had secured over 100 million users.
Most smartphones sold in China still operate on Google's Android operating system. However, since Google's add-on mobile services and app store are unavailable, alternative services such as Tencent's "WeChat" have filled the gap.
Samsung Electronics' decision to collaborate with Baidu is interpreted as part of efforts to expand its market share in China, the world's largest smartphone market.
Meanwhile, according to market research firm IDC on the 25th (local time), Apple ranked first in the Chinese smartphone market last year with a record-high market share of 17.3%. Honor, spun off from Huawei, took second place with a 16.8% share, followed by Vivo, Huawei, and Oppo.
