Visit to Apple Production Area, Jangsu-gun, Jeonbuk
Promise to Support Growth Management
Han Hoon, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, visited Jangsu-gun, Jeonbuk, a major apple-producing area, on the 29th and held a meeting with apple farmers to discuss development plans for stable apple production.
Vice Minister Han stated, "Last year, due to cold damage and anthracnose, the production of major fruits including apples decreased, causing significant damage to farmers. This year, we will support growth management through various methods to ensure stable production," adding, "We will raise the coverage level of crop disaster insurance to strengthen the disaster response safety net and support growth management through various means such as education and promotion for farmers."
Last year, due to abnormal weather conditions such as cold damage, heavy rain, and typhoons, natural disaster damage led to a decrease in apple production and difficulties for farmers. In response, this year the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs decided to actively respond to ensure stable supply of apples.
Starting this year, the basic coverage level of fruit set reduction insurance (insurance paid when fruit set decreases due to disasters before fruit setting) for items such as apples and pears will be raised from 50% to 70%, and insurance sales will begin on January 29, and to ensure stable production and supply of fruits widely consumed by the public, a public-private joint 'Fruit Growth Management Council' will be formed to focus on supporting the growth management of apples, pears, peaches, and persimmons.
