Since 2011, the ‘Faceless Rice Angel’ has donated 4,200 bags of 20kg rice, weighing 84 tons, worth 217 million KRW over 14 years, and has come again this year.
Early on the 10th, a truck carrying 300 bags of 20kg packaged rice arrived at the Wolgok 2-dong Community Center in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul. The only message was a brief phone call saying, “I’m sending rice early in the morning so that neighbors in need can have a more secure holiday. Please take good care of it.”
The staff at Wolgok 2-dong Community Center who received the angel’s call were filled with mixed emotions. One staff member said, “Since everyone is going through difficult times, we were somewhat prepared for the possibility that the angel might not be able to send rice,” adding, “After receiving the call, we feel respect and gratitude for the angel’s continued sharing despite hardships, and also relief in confirming the angel’s well-being.”
Welcoming the truck carrying 300 bags of rice and unloading it has now become an annual event in Wolgok 2-dong. Every year, on the early morning when the angel’s rice arrives, a remarkable scene unfolds in front of the Wolgok 2-dong Community Center, with not only public officials but also volunteers, residents out for a walk, and soldiers lining up to carry the rice. Following the angel’s example, various donations continue throughout Wolgok 2-dong and the entire Seongbuk-gu area.
Seongbuk-gu Mayor Lee Seung-ro said, “With soaring prices and a prolonged economic downturn, marginalized neighbors are living with even greater loneliness,” emphasizing, “The beautiful story unfolding in Wolgok 2-dong not only provides emotional support by showing that warm neighbors exist for those in need but also creates a virtuous cycle of kindness where those helped go on to help others. We will strive to honor the angel’s intentions even more.”
The ‘Nameless Angel’ who donates rice every year without revealing their identity continues to attract attention as to when they will finally show their face.
