Cashing Out by Proxy Receipt of Pension and Other Benefits
A couple in Kansas, USA, has been charged with receiving over $215,000 in pension benefits on behalf of a deceased father. The body had been hidden inside their home for six years.
Recently, the Associated Press and other outlets reported that a couple in Kansas concealed the body of the wife's father, Mike Carroll, who died in 2016 at the age of 81, in their home and collected his pension benefits on his behalf. They received pension payments for six years after Mike's death, totaling $216,067 (approximately 289.2 million KRW).
The couple had previously moved into Mike's house and were financially dependent on him. After Mike's death, they concealed it by making excuses to others about why Mike was not answering calls or why they could not visit him. Meanwhile, they withdrew pension payments deposited into Mike's accounts and converted them into cash.
Mike's son-in-law, Kirk Ritter, reported the death to the police in October 2022, after which Mike's body was discovered. The police began an investigation into the "mummified body" following the report, and prosecutors claim the couple deliberately concealed Mike's death.
The couple has not responded to media inquiries and is scheduled to appear in federal court in Kansas City, Kansas, on February 2.
