On the 19th, a mid-term report meeting was held with railway experts for the 'Metropolitan Area Express Railway (GTX-D) Gangdong-gu Introduction Feasibility Study'... Economic feasibility confirmed for the GTX-D Gangdong-gu route plan based on the presidential pledge line... Study to be completed by April with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport striving to include it in the '5th National Railway Network Construction Plan'
Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Soo-hee) announced on the 19th that it held a mid-term report meeting for the 'Feasibility Study on the Introduction of the Metropolitan Area Express Railway (GTX-D) Passing Through Gangdong-gu' to analyze the feasibility of the GTX-D line passing through Gangdong-gu and to review alternative routes.
At this report meeting, railway experts from Seoul Institute, Gyeonggi Research Institute, Korea Transportation Safety Authority, and others attended to review the progress of the project, analysis data, and interim review results, and to gather advisory opinions.
Gangdong-gu has been conducting the 'Feasibility Study on the Introduction of the Metropolitan Area Express Railway (GTX-D) Passing Through Gangdong-gu' since October last year to build objective data and prepare alternative routes so that the GTX-D line passing through Gangdong-gu can be reflected in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's '5th National Railway Network Construction Plan (2026-2035)'. This study analyzes the economic feasibility and viability of the route passing through Gangdong-gu based on the presidential pledge route and current economic and social indicators.
This study reflects the current urban railway network status of lines 5, 8, and 9 within the region, the road traffic network status such as Olympic-daero and Cheonho-daero, and major development projects and plans in Gangdong-gu and the areas affected by the route. It analyzes the economic and technical feasibility and route efficiency targeting major stations within the region. Through this interim review, the district confirmed once again that the GTX-D route passing through Gangdong-gu has secured economic feasibility.
This is the second time the economic feasibility of the route passing through Gangdong-gu has been confirmed. In the feasibility study conducted by the district in 2020, the economic feasibility and viability of the route passing through Gangdong-gu were also proven.
Meanwhile, to reflect the route passing through Gangdong-gu, the district directly explained the necessity of passing through Gangdong-gu to the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport who visited Gangdong-gu in November last year, and met the minister a total of five times to propose the route passing through Gangdong-gu.
In addition, active consultations have been promoted with related organizations such as the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport GTX Planning Team, Korea Transport Institute, and Seoul City.
The district plans to submit the results of this interim report to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to actively propose the route passing through Gangdong-gu. After the research project is completed in April this year, the final results will be submitted to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and related organizations to make every effort to ensure that the GTX-D route passing through Gangdong-gu is finally reflected in the '5th National Railway Network Construction Plan (2026-2035)'.
Also, the interim report results produced improved findings regarding the demand and feasibility of the direct connection of urban railway line 5. The district plans to continue the study until the final report to supplement the business feasibility of the direct connection project and reflect it in the current '2nd Seoul Metropolitan Urban Railway Network Construction Plan Amendment (2026-2035)' promoted by Seoul City, using it as momentum to re-promote the project.
Lee Soo-hee, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, stated, “The GTX-D passing through Gangdong-gu is essential to respond to the increase in traffic demand due to large-scale development projects in Gangdong-gu and the worsening congestion caused by the extension of surrounding new towns on lines 5, 8, and 9.” He added, “We will actively utilize the results of this study to make every effort to expand the metropolitan transportation network so that situations like the Gimpo Gold Line do not occur in Gangdong-gu.”
