Sacheon City in Gyeongnam Province is operating the 'Public Construction Wage Arrears Reporting Center' to ensure timely wage payments and stabilize the livelihood economy ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday.
From January 25 to February 2, the city plans to intensively operate the 'Public Construction Wage Arrears Reporting Center' to prevent wage arrears and protect workers and subcontractors for construction and service projects commissioned by the city.
When complaints about wage arrears from workers are received, the city will temporarily withhold payment for the construction work and make every effort to prevent wage arrears by mediating for an amicable resolution with the business owners.
However, for habitual and intentional wage arrears by business owners, the city plans to respond strictly by reporting them to the local Employment and Labor Office.
In particular, as a measure to stabilize people's livelihoods, a temporary special exception to the local contract system will be implemented. To expedite the early disbursement of construction and service payments, the progress inspection period will be shortened from the existing 7 days to 3 days, and payments will be made within 3 days from the date of claim.
Meanwhile, Sacheon City has been operating the Public Construction Wage Arrears Reporting Center year-round as wage arrears to workers have increased amid the ongoing recession in the construction industry.
Mayor Park Dongsik said, “Although we are facing difficulties due to rising prices, interest rate hikes, and economic downturn, we will do our best to prevent wage arrears so that all workers can enjoy a joyful holiday.”
