Establishment and Operation of Cold Wave Comprehensive Support Situation Room, Monitoring Damage and Rapid Emergency Response
Meeting Held on the 22nd at 4 PM to Review Cold Wave Countermeasure Progress
Jungnang-gu (Mayor Ryu Gyeong-gi) has launched an emergency response following the first cold wave advisory issued this year.
With the weather forecast predicting a severe cold wave with a wind chill temperature of minus 20 degrees Celsius, the district established a comprehensive cold wave support situation room from the 21st and set up a 24-hour emergency response system.
The Jungnang-gu Cold Wave Comprehensive Support Situation Room is composed of a situation control team, welfare measures team, facility measures team, medical support team, and public relations team, monitoring to prevent any damage to residents caused by the cold wave and responding promptly if any damage occurs.
On the 22nd at 4 p.m., anticipating the peak of the cold wave on the 23rd, the district held a “Cold Wave Countermeasure Progress Inspection Meeting” to review the operation of various cold wave mitigation facilities, support and protection for vulnerable groups, and cold wave preparedness of facilities.
To provide shelter from the severe cold, the district has designated and is operating a total of 55 cold wave shelters at district-run senior centers and community centers. Additionally, to help warm up from the cold wind while using public transportation, six smart shelters at bus stops, 173 heated chairs, and 29 cold weather shelters are also in operation.
Above all, the district carefully supports vulnerable groups who must endure the harsh cold due to economic difficulties. It conducts weekly visits and makes phone calls at least twice a week to check on the well-being of 1,600 elderly living alone.
Furthermore, for 4,000 elderly people requiring intensive health care, such as those with chronic illnesses, visiting nurses make weekly visits to monitor their health.
In addition, an emergency welfare system has been established to provide heating cost support and temporary accommodation fees to cold wave crisis households in need due to sudden cold wave damage.
The district also conducted inspections of park facilities such as restrooms and drinking fountains, as well as gas supply facilities, to prevent fire and pipe freezing damage, which are likely to occur due to the cold and dry weather.
Mayor Ryu Gyeong-gi stated, “We will thoroughly implement cold wave countermeasures without any gaps to prevent damage throughout this week of extreme cold and to safely protect vulnerable groups. We also ask residents to familiarize themselves with cold wave safety guidelines to prevent accidents.”
