Most Boiler Freezing Accidents Occur in Pipes
Maintain Temperature by Wrapping Boiler Connection Pipes with Insulation Material
On the 22nd, Kiturami provided guidance on 'Boiler Management Methods During Severe Cold' to prepare for freezing accidents at home, as a severe cold wave with temperatures around minus 10 degrees Celsius is forecast nationwide. Since boiler freezing accidents mostly occur in water-carrying pipes, it is essential to wrap the pipes thoroughly with insulation material to prevent freezing. It is recommended to check the direct water pipes, heating water pipes, hot water pipes, and condensate pipes connected to the boiler, and replace the insulation if it is worn out or in poor condition.
Kiturami Boiler products are equipped with a 'two-stage freeze prevention function' to prevent freezing accidents. When the heating water temperature drops below 8℃, the first stage activates the circulation pump to circulate water, and when it falls below 5℃, the second stage activates heating to prevent the boiler from freezing.
The freeze prevention function does not operate if the boiler power is off, so during the cold wave in winter, the boiler power should always be kept on, and the gas valve and distributor valve should also be left open. When going out, instead of turning off the boiler, using the away mode or lowering the indoor temperature can prevent freezing accidents while saving heating costs. Turning off the boiler and going out during severe cold causes the indoor temperature to drop sharply, which can lead to pipe bursts, and raising the indoor temperature again after returning consumes more fuel, increasing heating expenses.
If the boiler is frozen, refer to the 'Action Guidelines by Symptom' provided by Kiturami. If the boiler operates but no hot water comes out, it indicates that the direct water pipe or hot water pipe connected to the boiler is frozen. Remove the insulation wrapping the frozen pipe and repeatedly wrap it with a warm towel at about 50~60℃ to thaw it. If cold water does not come out, it means the water supply has been cut off due to freezing of the water pipes and water meter. If the water meter is frozen and damaged, report it to the local city or county waterworks office. If the valve or pipe is frozen, contact the management office or a professional equipment company for assistance.
If the floor remains cold despite heating, it is highly likely that the boiler interior or heating pipes are frozen. This is difficult to handle by oneself, so be sure to contact each manufacturer’s customer center, such as Kiturami Boiler, for assistance. When expert help is needed for pipe equipment, the Korea Heat Management Construction Association and the National Boiler Equipment Association, which have experts holding boiler equipment certifications, can provide safe services at reasonable prices.
A Kiturami Boiler official said, "Even simple self-measures for boiler management in winter can significantly prevent unexpected freezing accidents," and added, "We hope everyone safely gets through the rest of the winter by referring to Kiturami’s freeze prevention methods and action guidelines by symptom."
