Guro-gu Receives Re-certification as a 'Fair Trade City'

Guro-gu (District Mayor Moon Heon-il) has received re-certification as a Fair Trade City from the Korea Fair Trade Town Committee.

So far, among the autonomous districts of Seoul, only three districts, including Guro-gu, have been certified as Fair Trade Cities.

This certification is the first re-certification since the initial certification on December 10, 2021, and is valid until December 26, 2025.

Over the past two years, the district has carried out various activities to raise awareness of fair trade, including △establishing and operating the Fair Trade Committee and Fair Trade Council △conducting fair trade awareness education and activist training programs △hosting the fair trade campaign ‘Guro Fair 2 Weeks’ △operating promotional booths for fair trade products at events.

In particular, during events organized by the district such as the Social Economy Festival, Guro G Festival, and G Valley Smart Marathon, the district operated promotional booths with related organizations and conducted unique campaigns to increase residents’ interest and participation in fair trade.

As a result, the number of fair trade product sales locations in Guro-gu increased from 25 to 31.

Regarding fair trade communities, Sungkonghoe University succeeded in re-certification, and Yeongnim Middle School Social Cooperative received initial certification as a practicing enterprise.

During the re-certification period over the next two years, the district plans to increase fair trade product sales locations by 20% and add at least one more fair trade community to establish a Guro-style fair trade town.

A Guro-gu official said, “The re-certification as a Fair Trade City was possible thanks to the interest and cooperation of many people,” adding, “We will continue to do our best to spread awareness of fair trade and realize social values.”
