Last Year, Significant Reduction in Right-Turn Traffic Accidents
Jeonbuk Provincial Police Agency (Chief Im Byeong-suk) announced on the 21st that in order to reduce right-turn traffic accidents in the province, they promoted the introduction of diagonal crosswalks and simultaneous pedestrian signals last year. As a result, a total of 142 locations were installed and operated, including 49 diagonal crosswalks and 93 simultaneous pedestrian signals.
According to the police, a diagonal crosswalk is a method that grants pedestrian signals at an intersection all at once, allowing pedestrians to cross the road in all directions, including diagonally.

By turning on the pedestrian green light in all directions, vehicle entry into the intersection during pedestrian crossing can be fundamentally blocked. Simultaneous pedestrian signals are a signal operation method that grants pedestrian signals in all directions within an intersection.
According to research data from the Korea Road Traffic Authority in 2018, traffic accidents decreased by 9.4% on general roads where diagonal crosswalks were installed, and by 15.3% in school zones.
In fact, last year, right-turn traffic accidents in Jeonbuk Province amounted to 43 cases with 44 injuries, showing a reduction of 6 accidents and 7 casualties including 2 deaths compared to the previous year.
Kim Hyun-cheol, head of the traffic division, said, "We plan to continuously expand diagonal crosswalks and simultaneous pedestrian signals mainly in school zones and areas with high pedestrian traffic to reduce right-turn traffic accidents occurring in the province."
