Israel Airstrikes in Syria... 5 Including Senior Iranian Intelligence Official Killed

Death of Iran Revolutionary Guard Corps Intelligence Chief and Deputy Chief

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) senior intelligence officials were killed in an Israeli airstrike on Syria.

According to AFP and others on the 20th (local time), the Israeli military fired missiles at Damascus, the capital of Syria, killing at least five people including IRGC members.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a UK-based Syrian human rights organization, Israeli missiles struck a five-story building in Damascus on the same day.

SOHR reported, "At the time of the bombing, a meeting of Iran-related leaders was taking place in this building," adding, "The bombed building collapsed and five people died."

The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) also reported that Israel attacked a building in the Mazeh area of Damascus. Mazeh is home to the local UN office and various embassies.

The bombed building was used by an Iranian advisor supporting the Syrian government and was completely destroyed in the strike.

The Iranian semi-official Mehr News Agency reported that two of the deceased were the IRGC's intelligence chief and deputy chief in Syria.

Mehr News Agency stated, "The IRGC's intelligence chief and deputy chief in Syria, along with two other operatives, were martyred in the Israeli attack."

Israel has frequently conducted airstrikes in Syria, which has been embroiled in civil war for over a decade. The main targets have been government forces and militias supported by Iran. Since the war with Hamas, supported by Iran, began in October last year, Israel has intensified its airstrikes.
