Gangdong-gu Opens Emergency Medical Education Center in Health Clinic, First in Southeast Seoul

Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Su-hee) opened an emergency medical education center within the Cheonho Health Branch on the 18th.

The center is a permanent training facility designed to allow any Gangdong-gu resident to easily learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). It covers an area of 173.3㎡ (approximately 52 pyeong) and is expected to accommodate up to 30 people practicing simultaneously.

CPR Education Since 2009... Surpassing 140,000 Participants, Center Opening to Open a New Horizon

The district has been providing CPR education since 2009, educating over 140,000 residents cumulatively.

According to a recent acute cardiac arrest survey released by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, the survival rate of patients increases more than 2.1 times when CPR is performed by bystanders during an acute cardiac arrest. However, to take appropriate action within the so-called golden time of 4 minutes during an emergency, regular training is essential. Especially since cardiac arrest most frequently occurs at home, learning CPR in advance can prioritize saving one’s own family members. Therefore, the opening of this center is expected to open a new horizon in emergency medical education.

Enhancing Education Quality Through Professional Instructor Collaboration... Combining Theory and Practice, Promoting On-site Visiting Education

The education quality will be enhanced by collaborating with instructors from professional training institutions. Additionally, with the cooperation of medical staff from Gangdong Kyung Hee University Hospital, a regional emergency medical center in the southeastern area, training will be provided to legally mandated groups such as childcare teachers.

The district will conduct both theoretical education and CPR practical training to ensure swift and effective response during emergencies such as cardiac arrest. Furthermore, ‘on-site visiting education’ will also be promoted. ▲Education for elementary, middle, and high school students, ▲Group training sessions can be applied for via official documents for schools and by phone for organizations.

Lee Su-hee, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, stated, “By opening the Seoul Gangdong-gu Emergency Medical Education Center, we can now provide education that protects the health and safety of residents at all times,” adding, “We will strengthen residents’ capabilities to take appropriate action within the golden time of 4 minutes through continuous CPR education, and strive to improve disaster medical response capabilities to realize a safe Gangdong that protects the lives of local residents even during disasters.”

Education applications can be made through the district health center’s website, and legally mandated groups such as childcare teachers will be guided on application methods through their associations. The training sessions will be conducted with 20 residents and 30 legally mandated participants per session, and from this year, all participants who complete the training will receive certificates immediately.

Additionally, the center will be used as a permanent CPR training facility during regular hours and will also serve as a training site for enhancing disaster medical response capabilities during downtime.
