The MOU participating institutions agreed to actively cooperate on ▲fostering the bio industry and establishing industrial cooperation foundations in other fields ▲developing digital health technologies and supporting the global expansion of bio startup companies.
San Diego is the second largest city in California and has advanced high-tech fields such as life sciences, aerospace, and semiconductors.
With a developed bioscience sector, about 730,000 people work in approximately 1,000 bio companies, generating an economic effect of about 27 billion dollars (as of 2020), making it a center of the U.S. bio industry.
It is considered one of the three major bio clusters in the U.S., along with Boston and San Francisco. In the semiconductor field, it is also a major hub in California, hosting key semiconductor companies such as Qualcomm, Microchip Technology, and Ripplefrog.
The University of California San Diego is a research-oriented public comprehensive university affiliated with the University of California (UC), recognized as world-class in bio and biotechnology fields. It has played a significant role in San Diego’s growth as a bio cluster, producing 27 Nobel laureates.
Since 2023, Ulsan City has been providing great support for three startup companies in the Ulsan area to enter and commercialize in the U.S. market through the "Digital Healthcare Global Support Project" jointly promoted by Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology and UCSD.
Ulsan-based startup Tyroscope Co., Ltd. is currently undergoing a $10 million investment review from a U.S. venture capital firm, SB Solution Co., Ltd. has signed a preliminary contract for 200,000 units annually with a Hangzhou company (Health Online Information Technology Co., Ltd.), establishing a foothold for entry into the Asian market. Additionally, DNA Corporation has achieved results by building local partnerships with global medical device companies.
Mayor Kim Doo-gyeom of Ulsan said, “The project to cooperate with the City of San Diego, one of the leading cities in the U.S. bio industry, and the world-renowned research-focused UCSD to build a bio cluster will greatly help advance Ulsan’s core industries and foster new growth engine industries.”
