Suwon City to Reduce Ultrafine Dust to '17㎍/㎥ or Less' by Next Year

Suwon City to Reduce Ultrafine Dust to '17㎍/㎥ or Less' by Next Year Suwon City Hall

The city of Suwon in Gyeonggi Province has set the target annual average concentration of fine dust for 2025 at '17㎍/㎥ or less' and is promoting the establishment of a comprehensive plan.

To this end, Suwon announced on the 18th that it has established a 'Comprehensive Fine Dust Management Plan' consisting of five major strategies and 13 tasks for this year: ▲policy foundation ▲high concentration response system establishment ▲fine dust emission source management ▲air quality information provision ▲citizen health protection and response education.

First, Suwon will focus on crackdowns on dust from construction sites, restrict the operation of old diesel vehicles, strengthen road cleaning, and enforce idling regulations.

In particular, the city will strengthen management of construction sites generating dust by signing joint response agreements with 14 construction sites and providing dust reduction education to on-site managers. It will also designate areas densely populated with vulnerable facilities near roadsides and atmospheric emission sources as 'Fine Dust Intensive Management Zones' for focused management.

Additionally, from April to December, the city will visit facilities used by vulnerable groups to fine dust such as daycare centers and elementary schools to provide education on fine dust response measures.

As of 2021, the emission ratio of fine dust by sector in Suwon showed that fugitive dust from construction sites and roads accounted for the highest at 47.14%, followed by non-road mobile sources at 26.26%.

A Suwon city official stated, "Although the annual average concentration of fine dust in Suwon has been steadily decreasing, it can rise at any time due to domestic and international factors such as weather conditions. We will faithfully implement the comprehensive fine dust management plan to create an environment where citizens can live safely without worrying about fine dust."

Meanwhile, Suwon's annual average fine dust concentration has been on a downward trend: 26㎍/㎥ in 2016, 25㎍/㎥ in 2019, 19㎍/㎥ in 2021, and 18㎍/㎥ in 2023.
