Approximately 550m two-way section of Guchonmyeon-ro, Gangdong-gu (from near Cheonho Elementary School entrance intersection to Guchonmyeon-ro 251), total 142 business signs newly renovated with eco-friendly energy-saving LED signs
Kangdong-gu (District Mayor Lee Su-hee) announced on the 18th that the signboards of a total of 142 businesses along both directions of Gucheonmyeon-ro (from near the Cheonho Elementary School entrance intersection to Gucheonmyeon-ro 251), a section of about 550 meters, have been newly renovated with eco-friendly, energy-saving LED signboards.
This project is a "Beautiful Signboard Street" creation initiative that renovates old and non-standard signboards into signboards that harmonize with the surrounding environment while reflecting the individuality of each business, funded by 250 million KRW in national funds plus the Outdoor Advertising Development Fund (formerly the district budget).
Since June last year, the district received letters of intent from local store owners to participate in the project and formed the 'Signboard Improvement Promotion Residents' Committee,' a voluntary consultative body of merchants. Residents actively participated in the entire process from design planning to the selection of manufacturing and installation companies, expressing their opinions.
In particular, with consulting support from design advisory committee members designated by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, the project was able to enhance the street's dignity with distinctive construction methods and designs throughout the project section.
Additionally, by concurrently promoting the 'Window Advertising Maintenance Project,' which improves large and vividly colored sheet advertisements on glass walls and windows into simple and sophisticated designs, the effectiveness of the signboard improvement project was further increased.
At the beginning of the project, there were difficulties due to opposition from store owners who believed that large and flashy signboards were better for business promotion. However, through continuous communication and persuasion, the district was able to complete the signboard improvement project. In fact, after the installation of distinctive and charming signboards, even the initially opposing store owners expressed considerable satisfaction.
A store owner who participated in this project said, "By systematically renovating large, old protruding signboards, the street feels much wider and more organized," and a nearby resident also said, "The dark and dull street is transforming into a bright and beautiful street, and the street seems to be gradually gaining vitality." This signboard improvement project is receiving high praise from local residents.
Lee Su-hee, Mayor of Kangdong-gu, said, "This signboard improvement project is a very meaningful project led by residents," and added, "I sincerely thank the store owners who actively participated in the project, and I will do my best to create a clean and beautiful Kangdong-gu."
