Artworks Expected to be Exhibited at Grand Palais and Domestic and International Branches
The Pompidou Center, a contemporary art museum in Paris, France, will close for five years from the second half of next year until 2030 for renovation work.
According to foreign media including Le Figaro on the 17th (local time), the Pompidou Center had started renovation work last year and planned to complete it by 2027, but postponed the schedule to remain open during the Paris Olympics this year. Accordingly, the building will be gradually closed after the Olympics and completely shut down from December 2025.
Opened in 1977, the Pompidou Center is a complex cultural center housing an art museum, public library, and theater. It is famous for its unique design with exposed steel structures on the exterior. Previously, the government announced in early 2021 that it would invest 262 million euros (about 350 billion KRW) for renovation, citing safety concerns as no renovation had been done since its opening. Plans include asbestos removal from the building’s exterior walls, strengthening fire safety measures, ensuring accessibility for people with disabilities, and optimizing energy efficiency.
Most of the Pompidou Center’s artworks will be relocated to the Grand Palais, where renovations will be completed by the end of this year, to be exhibited to visitors. There are also plans to distribute the collection to Pompidou Center branches already open or to be newly opened domestically and internationally. This includes a branch scheduled to open in 2025 at the 63 Building in Seoul. The library and other facilities within the Pompidou Center will also be moved to other districts in Paris.
