Gurye-gun 'People Who Make Gurye Wheat Bread' Founded

Formation of Bakers' Association to Revitalize Alleyway Bakeries

Gurye-gun, Jeollanam-do announced that on the 15th, the inaugural general meeting of the ‘People Making Gurye Wheat Bread’ was held at the Gurye-eup Urban Regeneration Support Center as part of the urban regeneration project to revitalize bakery shops in the downtown alleys.

‘People Making Gurye Wheat Bread’ is a group formed by 11 bakers in the area for the purpose of exchanging information and communication among local bakers. They plan to collaborate with local residents to promote various events and Gurye wheat (domestically produced wheat from Gurye) and establish a bread pilgrimage network.

The inaugural president, CEO Lee Eun-ha, said, “Although it is more expensive than imported flour, if we create healthy bread unique to Gurye using Gurye wheat, it will become a great pride of Gurye.”

County Governor Kim Soon-ho said, “Gurye wheat bread made by skilled bakers will become a flagship product that promotes Gurye,” and added, “The county will also provide various supports.”

Meanwhile, Gurye-gun is a major production area of domestic wheat, producing 18% of the national output and 49% of Jeollanam-do’s output.

There is a domestic wheat factory in Gwang-ui-myeon, and 14 domestic wheat bakeries are operating throughout Gurye.

The county is actively promoting the wheat produced in Gurye-gun by naming it ‘Gurye Wheat’ to increase the income of wheat-producing farmers and foster bakeries.
