A breakthrough has emerged to resolve the so-called ‘human waste crisis’ at newly constructed apartments, where construction workers were helpless due to the lack of proper restroom facilities. A small-to-medium enterprise has proposed an innovative solution specifically designed to address the human waste issue in high-rise buildings.
BR Technology, an eco-friendly company headquartered in Busan, announced on the 16th that it has developed the ‘BR Smart Toilet,’ which can be installed at any construction site, whether high-rise or low-rise, and is currently being distributed nationwide.
This smart toilet boasts the advantage of being easy and quick to install and dismantle anywhere in high-rise buildings such as apartments and office buildings.
The company explained that the flush toilet is made as a portable integrated unit that can be moved using elevators or tower cranes installed at construction sites. It applies a water-saving energy-efficient system that requires no electricity or water connection, making it installable in places without residential infrastructure.
A company representative stated, “Waste treatment is also possible by transferring it through valve piping to a mobile storage tank, and management and cleaning are simple, allowing for long-term use throughout the construction period.”
Additionally, unlike ‘foam-type flush’ toilets, the smart toilet is designed to satisfy both environmental and hygiene standards. The waste is not visible, and it features a backflow prevention function that significantly reduces odors. It is also known to receive positive feedback from managers and users due to minimal damage and malfunctions.
A BR Technology official said, “One of the most significant practical problems for workers at high-rise construction sites is the shortage of restrooms,” adding, “The smart toilet can be installed anywhere regardless of building height, resulting in high satisfaction on site.”
According to the National Construction Workers’ Union, the number of restrooms at construction sites is absolutely insufficient. On average, 172 workers are deployed per site, but the number of restrooms averages only 2.5.
It was found that workers at high-rise construction sites spend an average of over 30 minutes using restrooms installed on the ground. Because of this, some workers relieve themselves at their work locations instead of going down to the ground, leading to repeated human waste incidents.
The company explained, “With competitive pricing, orders and inquiries from domestic construction sites are increasing.”
The smart toilet has begun addressing the physiological needs of construction workers nationwide, starting with the Samsung Engineering site in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province, and the SK Ecoplant Yongin Yongsu 1 District site in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province.
It is being installed nationwide, including at POSCO E&C, Korea Gas Corporation, Pyeongtaek Urban Corporation, Samcheok City Sampyo Cement site in Gangwon Province, the new Busan Yeongdo District Complex Innovation Center site, the Paju-Yangju highway construction site, the Goseong County thermal power plant site in Gyeongnam Province, and the Korea Railroad Corporation site in Jecheon, Chungbuk Province.
A BR Technology representative said, “The physiological needs of site workers are fundamentally a human rights issue,” and added, “We developed this product as a practical solution to address it.”
