Electroland "Continued Fine Dust 'Bad' in New Year... Air Purifier Sales Up 54%"

Increased Demand on Hazy Days
Also Affected by Replacement Cycle Due

Electroland announced on the 15th that air purifier sales have increased as fine dust levels remained at a 'bad' level continuously throughout January this year.

According to Electroland, since the end of last year, fine dust originating from China has been flowing in, and due to climate change, there has been no wind to clear the fine dust, resulting in hazy days nationwide continuing day after day this month. As a result, Electroland's investigation of air purifier sales from January 1 to 14, 2024, showed a 54% increase compared to the same period last year.

Electroland explained that air purifiers are home appliances whose sales trends are highly sensitive to air quality. Just as fan sales surge the day after a tropical night in midsummer, Electroland's analysis is that air purifiers are seasonal appliances that consumers decide to purchase when air quality worsens.

Electroland also cited the replacement cycle of air purifiers as a reason for the growth in sales. From 2016 to 2018, when air purifiers emerged as 'new appliances,' sales increased at home appliance retailers including Electroland. After more than eight years, as air purifiers have aged and the filters that had been replaced and used have deteriorated in function, consumers have started purchasing new air purifiers.

An Electroland representative said, "As days with thick fine dust covering the sky continue, sales are increasing not only for air purifiers but also for clothing care appliances that filter fine dust clinging to clothes when going outside," adding, "Since fine dust is expected to be severe until this spring, those planning to replace or newly purchase air purifiers and clothing care appliances are encouraged to visit the nearest Electroland."
