Busan City Provides $100,000 Relief Fund for Earthquake Damage in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan

Magnitude 7.6 Earthquake Causes Hundreds of Deaths, Humanitarian Aid Decided for Relief Efforts

Busan City will provide $100,000 (approximately 130 million KRW) in relief funds to Japan, where a magnitude 7.6 earthquake caused hundreds of deaths.

This is the first time in eight years since the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake, which claimed 276 lives, that the death toll from an earthquake in Japan has exceeded 100.

Since signing a sister city agreement with Shimonoseki City, Japan, 48 years ago, Busan has also established sister city relations with Fukuoka City and friendly cooperation city agreements with Osaka City and Nagasaki Prefecture, maintaining steady exchanges with Japan.

This relief fund support was made based on the judgment that humanitarian assistance is necessary for Japan, where support such as relief supplies for disaster victims is urgently needed, with the hope that the Japanese people will quickly recover from the earthquake damage and regain peaceful daily life.

Starting with a 100 million KRW donation for recovery from the Sichuan earthquake in China in 2008, the city has supported $100,000 for typhoon recovery in the Philippines in 2013, $50,000 for earthquake recovery in Ecuador in 2016, COVID-19 relief supplies to its sister city in China in 2020, $100,000 each for typhoon damage in the Philippines and war damage in Ukraine in 2022, and $100,000 for earthquake recovery in T?rkiye in 2023.

Mayor Park Hyung-jun expressed, “I extend my condolences to the victims and bereaved families affected by the unexpected earthquake in Japan, and I hope that residents in the affected areas will regain peaceful daily life as soon as possible.”
