National Education Committee to Promote Mid- to Long-Term Education Development Plan... Draft to Be Prepared by Year-End

25th Meeting Held at Government Seoul Office
Finalized in March Next Year After Gathering Expert and Public Opinions
'Public Opinion Collection' Bulletin Board Also Established

On the afternoon of the 12th, the National Education Commission held its 25th meeting at the Government Seoul Office to receive reports and discuss the '2024 Work Plan,' which contains mid- to long-term educational plans.

The work plan for this year, discussed by the National Education Commission, includes the promotion of establishing a mid- to long-term national education development plan. The development plan is expected to include the educational vision, basic goals, mid- to long-term educational policy directions, and major tasks by period and field such as the school system, teacher policies, college entrance policies, and educational conditions.

To this end, the National Education Commission is operating expert committees and special committees alongside conducting various policy research. In the first half of this year, the Commission plans to present the goals and ideals that education should aim for over the next 10 years through expert discussions on the future education vision and public opinion gathering. To spread social consensus on educational reform and core agendas, public debates and seminars will be held to collect opinions, and the results will be compiled to prepare a draft development plan by the end of this year. After additional opinion gathering, the development plan will be finalized in March next year.

The Commission’s work plan for this year also includes establishing a system to systematically promote the procedures for establishing and revising the national curriculum. By efficiently operating the National Curriculum Expert Committee and the National Curriculum Monitoring Group, the Commission plans to review the high school curriculum (including foreign language high schools, international high schools, and autonomous private high schools) in line with the scheduled high school system reorganization this year.

Additionally, the Commission will establish a 'Public Opinion Communication Board' this month to collect public opinions. If more than 100,000 citizens agree on an opinion regarding educational issues and policies within 90 days on the board, the Commission must review whether to proceed with the opinion collection and coordination process.

Meanwhile, at the meeting, the Commission will receive an interim report on the activities of the Special Committee for Future Science Talent Development. Related promotion plans will also be reported following the Ministry of Health and Welfare’s request for prior consultation on the curriculum impact. The Commission plans to conduct prior consultations with the Ministry of Health and Welfare based on reviews by the National Curriculum Expert Committee regarding the impact of the Ministry’s draft amendment to the 'Enforcement Decree of the Act on Suicide Prevention and the Promotion of a Culture of Respect for Life' on school education.

Chairman Lee Baeyong stated, "In the Year of the Blue Dragon, the National Education Commission will prepare a mid- to long-term national education development plan as a blueprint for national education so that Korea’s education can begin a new leap into the future."
