Seongdong-gu Promotes Customized Specialized Projects Highlighting Traditional Market Characteristics

Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jeong Won-oh)'s traditional markets are set to become more vibrant by highlighting their unique charms.

On the 2nd, three traditional markets in Seongdong-gu were selected for the '2024 Traditional Market and Shopping District Revitalization Support Project' hosted by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups.

The selected traditional markets are Yongdap Sangga Market, Ttukseom Station Shopping District, and Seongsu Station Alley-type Shopping District, securing a total of 392.5 million KRW in national funding through this project.

Yongdap Sangga Market and Ttukseom Station Shopping District will receive 210 million KRW and 82.5 million KRW respectively over two years, while Seongsu Station Alley-type Shopping District will receive 100 million KRW in national funding over one year.

Yongdap Sangga Market was selected in the cultural tourism category. Cultural tourism markets focus on developing traditional markets by linking their resources with local history, culture, and tourism assets to create markets with regional characteristics.

Yongdap Sangga Market has been a traditional market frequented steadily by local residents and nearby office workers, but recently faced difficulties due to population outflow caused by redevelopment and sales decline from COVID-19.

With this project, Yongdap Sangga Market is set to transform into a tourism-oriented market. It plans to actively utilize the adjacent Cheonggyecheon Stream. Noticing the many cyclists around Cheonggyecheon, a bicycle-specialized space and benches will be installed, and discount events will be held for customers who bring bicycle helmets. Take-out drinks and snacks that cyclists can enjoy will also be provided. Customized education for merchants, enhanced hygiene, and fire prevention maintenance will be thoroughly implemented.

Ttukseom Station Shopping District was selected in the digital traditional market category. Digital traditional markets focus on enhancing the sustainable online advancement capabilities of traditional markets. Comprehensive support includes online product discovery, consulting, and infrastructure support. Located in the trendy Seongsu-dong area, it plans to attract not only the main customers of traditional markets aged 40 to 60 but also younger generations and nearby office workers.

Many shops in Ttukseom Station Shopping District have already joined online platforms and are steadily growing. This year, they plan to expand by developing unique meal kit products, targeting younger customers through SNS marketing, and activating networks among merchants.

Seongsu Station Alley-type Shopping District was selected for the First Step Foundation Project. This project targets traditional markets equipped with infrastructure to promote cultural tourism and digital traditional market projects. As a newly established market in Seongdong-gu, Seongsu Station Alley-type Shopping District is expected to regain vitality through this project.

To facilitate payment convenience, Zero Pay and card payments will be expanded, and price and origin labeling will be strictly enforced. Additionally, showcases will be installed to create a convenient and clean market that customers want to visit.

Moreover, a weekend-specialized flea market will be operated to provide residents with various attractions and entertainment.

Jeong Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, stated, “Revitalizing traditional markets leads to regional economic development. The traditional market specialization project will serve as a foundation to invigorate the local economy by leveraging the characteristics and strengths of traditional markets.” He added, “We will continue to develop the differentiated charms that can only be seen in Seongdong-gu’s traditional markets.”
