[CES 2024] Kia PV5 is a Versatile PBV

PBV PV5 World Premiere
Customizable for Purpose
Showcases Modular Component Replacement Technology

"Kia's brand-first PBV (Purpose Built Vehicle) PV5 is a versatile PBV tailored to connect with customers' lifestyles."

On the 9th (local time), Kia's booth at CES 2024, the world's largest electronics and IT exhibition, showcased the brand's first PBV, the PV5. The PV5, unveiled for the first time in the world at this event, was the highlight of Kia's CES exhibition this year.

The PV5 features easily detachable modules. This allows a single vehicle to be transformed for various purposes. Inside, a sliding-type bi-directional flip seat was applied, enabling free directional changes without rotating the seat. Functions for the convenience of mobility-impaired individuals, such as a lift for easy wheelchair boarding and alighting, were also incorporated.

In addition to the mid-size PV5, the large PV7 and small PV1 models were also exhibited. The PV7 is a large model suitable for long-distance logistics transport, while the PV1 was made small for short-distance logistics transport. Notably, a driving module that minimizes the turning radius was installed, allowing perpendicular and diagonal driving, as well as on-the-spot rotation and pivot turns (freely rotating by arbitrarily setting the central axis). This means it can quickly move even in narrow spaces where vehicle entry is difficult.

Furthermore, the vehicle interior features a rail and tile system that allows creating a "personalized vehicle." Speakers, shelves, or various accessories can be attached to desired areas. Also, the newly revealed PBV concept lineup included front and rear interactive display panels that can convey visual information to other vehicles or pedestrians, and a panoramic solar roof made of transparent film that enhances openness while enabling solar charging, attracting visitors' attention.

The exhibition also showcased Kia's innovative production technologies for making PBVs. First, the 'Easy Swap' technology, which allows easy replacement of vehicle modules, was introduced. This technology uses a one-touch electric hybrid fastening method employing both magnetic and mechanical forces instead of traditional bolt fastening. Once commercialized, this technology will enable PBVs to be used for various purposes, transforming from ride-hailing vehicles during the day to logistics delivery vehicles at night.

Another technology is the Dynamic Hybrid technology suitable for small-volume, multi-model production. It uses structures connecting each body to expand or reduce the vehicle size. This method assembles lightweight standard parts and does not require large-scale production facilities. It means vehicles of desired sizes can be manufactured without processes like pressing, painting, or welding.
