Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL) has removed toilet paper from individual stalls in some subway station public restrooms and replaced it with shared toilet paper rolls.


Recently, restroom notices posted in public restrooms at some subway stations in the Seoul metropolitan area have sparked debates online.

On a recent online community, a post claimed that "KORAIL stopped supplying toilet paper due to budget cuts." This led to comments such as "This is not appropriate for the current times" and "It would be embarrassing if you urgently need it." Many expressed disbelief that a public institution like KORAIL would provide shared toilet paper in railway restrooms.


Some defended the move, saying, "Providing toilet paper in every stall could lead to unexpected expenses," and "Having toilet paper in each stall is not hygienic."


Regarding this, KORAIL stated that the shared toilet paper provision was not due to government budget cuts.


KORAIL told Yonhap News Agency, "In some stations, considering the station budget and number of users, toilet paper was moved to shared spaces," but added, "Since the beginning of the year, many places have reverted to providing toilet paper in each stall."


However, the restrooms with shared toilet paper are limited to some subway stations, and most subway stations reportedly still provide toilet paper in each toilet stall.
