Cheongsong-gun, Gyeongbuk Province, announced that the ‘2024 The North Face Cup Cheongsong National Ice Climbing Championship · Cheongsong ICE CLIMBING FESTIVAL’ successfully concluded on the 6th and 7th, and has officially entered the preparation phase for the Cheongsong Ice Climbing World Cup, which will be held over two days on the 13th and 14th.
Hosted by the International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA) and the Korea Alpine Federation, and organized by Cheongsong-gun and the Gyeongbuk Provincial Mountaineering Federation, this event is supported by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Korea Sports Promotion Foundation, the Korean Olympic Committee, and Gyeongbuk Province. The competition is divided into lead and speed categories, with the opening ceremony on the 12th, lead preliminaries and men’s and women’s speed preliminaries and finals on the 13th, and men’s and women’s lead semifinals and finals, followed by the awards ceremony on the final day, the 14th.
The tournament features world-class ice climbers including the world-ranked No. 1 male Mohsen BEHESHTI RAD (Iran), world-ranked No. 1 female Vivien LABARILE (Switzerland), female lead world-ranked No. 2 Sina GOETZ (Switzerland), and male lead world-ranked No. 3 Benjamin BOSSHARD (Switzerland). In addition, 110 athletes and officials from 16 countries, including 25 top domestic athletes such as Yang Myung-wook (speed, world-ranked No. 2) and Shin Un-seon (lead, world-ranked No. 3), will participate, promising thrilling competitions.
The venue offers various attractions and activities such as the Cheongsong Baekja Exhibition and Tourism Photo Exhibition, free tasting of Cheongsong apples, and especially features an ice climbing wall behind the competition site, allowing visitors to experience the pristine natural beauty of Cheongsong Ice Valley firsthand.
County Governor Yoon Kyung-hee stated, “Since its inception in 2011, the ‘2024 Cheongsong Ice Climbing World Cup’ has been recognized as a successful example of branding an international competition by linking natural scenery with a specialized sports event. Based on the know-how and experience accumulated so far, we will do our utmost in safety inspections and facility management to provide the best experience for athletes and spectators alike.”
