Pinetek Invests in UV Sensor Company 'Root Sensor'

Expectations for Strengthened Collaboration Including Mobile

FineTec announced on the 8th that it has decided to make a strategic investment in RootSensor, a specialized company in ultra-compact UV (ultraviolet) sensors.

Through this investment, FineTec expects to collaborate in various fields including mobile devices, wearable devices, and smart cars.

RootSensor is a startup established in 2020 after being selected for Samsung Electronics' in-house venture incubation program, 'C-Lab Inside.' The company developed an ultra-compact and ultra-thin UV sensor capable of measuring ultraviolet rays from any angle. In particular, it has attracted attention by complementing existing UV sensors, whose measurement results vary depending on the angle of incidence, with its proprietary UV measurement algorithm.

Since the sensor is unaffected by changes in measurement angle, it possesses sensor design technology that allows for convenient measurement and management of UV exposure anytime and anywhere when mounted on mobile and wearable devices. This technology won the Prime Minister's Award at the 'Korea Invention Patent Exhibition' last year.

Moreover, UV sensors have the advantage of being applicable in various fields. They can be used not only in wearable devices but also in automobiles, medical devices, semiconductor equipment, and water purification equipment. According to market research firm Global Information, the global UV sensor market is expected to grow from $1.9 billion in 2022 to $3.2 billion in 2027, at a compound annual growth rate of 18.05%.

FineTec explained that since sensors are also needed for its mobile and home appliance touch components, synergy effects are anticipated.

Currently, FineTec owns a corporation and factory with an area of approximately 6,000 pyeong (20,000㎡) in the Hoa Mac Industrial Complex, Ha Nam Province, Vietnam. It is known to be the largest among nearby Korean companies. The company produces mobile parts such as digitizers and touch systems, as well as home appliance components.

A company representative stated, “We are continuously discovering future growth engines through strategic investments in companies that can create synergy with our existing business. Through this strategic investment, we plan to collaborate with RootSensor in FineTec’s core areas such as mobile and home appliances.”
