Disney's 'Wish' Starts at No.1 at the Box Office
1.21 Million Weekend Theatergoers
Disney animation 'Wish' started off as the box office number one during its opening weekend. Director Kim Han-min's 'Noryang: Sea of Death,' which was pushed to second place, is increasingly unlikely to break even.
On the 8th, the Korean Film Council's integrated box office system reported that 'Wish' attracted 441,950 viewers over the weekend (May 5-7), securing the top spot at the box office. Since its release on the 3rd, it has drawn a cumulative audience of 622,460.
With a production budget of $200 million (262.58 billion KRW), Disney's 100th anniversary film 'Wish' tells the story of a spirited girl living in the magical kingdom of Rosas who, together with a star possessing infinite energy, confronts the all-powerful King Magnifico. It is a musical animation that shows how sincere human wishes and courage can create amazing things.
Although it earned $60 million (78.774 billion KRW) at the North American box office and $180 million (236.322 billion KRW) worldwide, it started off as the number one box office hit in Korea during its opening weekend.
The final story of the Admiral Yi Sun-sin trilogy, 'Noryang: Sea of Death' (hereafter 'Noryang,' directed by Kim Han-min), has hit a red light in terms of box office success. During the same period, it attracted 269,551 viewers, falling to second place. Its cumulative audience stands at 4,167,359. Since its release on the 20th of last month, it drew 1.26 million viewers on its first weekend and 770,000 on its second weekend, but momentum declined to 260,000 in the third weekend.
'Noryang' is a film with a total production cost exceeding 30 billion KRW, and its break-even point is 7.2 million viewers. It needs to attract over 3 million more viewers to turn a profit in theaters, but it is currently far from that target.
'Spring in Seoul' (directed by Kim Sung-soo), which became the second film to reach 10 million viewers last year, attracted 258,242 viewers, ranking third. Its cumulative audience reached 12,538,565.
Fourth place went to the animation 'New Dimension! Crayon Shin-chan The Movie: Superpower Showdown ~Fly, Handmade Kimbap~,' fifth to 'Aquaman: Lost Kingdom,' sixth to the re-released 'The First Slam Dunk,' and seventh to 'The Host.'
The total number of moviegoers who visited theaters last weekend was 1,213,504.
