Jungnang-gu Operates 'Food Safety Analysis Lab' to Respond to Radioactive Contamination in Seafood

Jungnang-gu Operates 'Food Safety Analysis Lab' to Respond to Radioactive Contamination in Seafood

Jungnang-gu (District Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi) will operate a 'Food Safety Analysis Laboratory' starting from the 15th to provide safe food to its residents.

Following the discharge of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan last August, residents' interest in seafood safety has increased. The district plans to take the lead in supplying safe seafood through thorough radiation inspections.

The laboratory will conduct regular radiation tests on seafood distributed in the market. The inspection targets include seafood with high consumer demand such as mackerel, croaker, pomfret, and flatfish.

Inspections will be carried out by randomly collecting samples of seafood sold in local traditional markets and large supermarkets. Regular inspections will be conducted 2 to 3 times a week, and the results will be promptly posted on the district office website for residents to check. Additionally, to enhance trust in seafood and create a safe consumption environment, strict management of 'origin labeling' will also be enforced.

Ryu Kyung-gi, Mayor of Jungnang-gu, stated, "As residents' concerns about radioactive seafood have recently increased, we have decided to independently operate the 'Food Safety Analysis Laboratory' to strictly manage the safety of seafood products. We will continue to make greater efforts to supply food that residents can consume with peace of mind."

The district is proactively leading various projects to create a safe food environment, including ▲designation of restaurant hygiene grades ▲joint public-private inspections of food-related businesses ▲customized hygiene facility improvement projects for restaurants ▲focused collection and inspection of senior-friendly foods. Due to these efforts, Jungnang-gu ranked first among Seoul's districts in the '2023 Comprehensive Evaluation of Food Hygiene in Autonomous Districts' last December and was selected as an 'Excellent Institution for Food Poisoning Prevention Management in 2023' by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.
