Mayor Lee Kang-deok, "Committed to Creating a Safe Environment for Citizen
Pohang City's 'Hyeongsan River River Environment Improvement Project' has been selected as a preliminary feasibility study target project by the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
At the 1st Fiscal Project Evaluation Committee meeting of the Ministry of Economy and Finance in 2024 held on the 5th, the Hyeongsan River River Environment Improvement Project was reviewed and approved as a preliminary feasibility study target project.
The 'Hyeongsan River River Environment Improvement Project' implemented by the Ministry of Environment is a project to prevent flood damage through river embankment maintenance and dredging of sedimentation sections, with a total project cost of 763.1 billion KRW. The project involves dredging 12.6 million cubic meters of sediment and reinforcing 49.8 km of embankments, with the project period from this year until 2029.
The city has continuously requested the government to dredge the Hyeongsan River to protect citizens' lives and property from disasters caused by extreme rainfall, as flood warnings have been issued annually since 2018, increasing concerns about flooding.
In particular, Mayor Lee Kang-deok of Pohang actively urged the swift implementation of the Hyeongsan River channel maintenance when Minister of Environment Han Hwa-jin visited Pohang in July last year.
Accordingly, the Ministry of Environment submitted a preliminary feasibility study request to the Ministry of Economy and Finance in November last year to expedite the Hyeongsan River Environment Improvement Project, and it has now been selected as a preliminary feasibility study target project.
Mayor Lee Kang-deok said, “I appreciate the Ministry of Environment's proactive administration in preparing for the risk of flooding of the Hyeongsan River in an era of frequent climate change and intensified natural disasters,” and added, “Pohang City will join forces with the central government to create a safe environment for citizens and businesses from disasters and calamities.”
