Jeonnam Province plans to make every effort to expedite the preliminary feasibility study approval for the construction project of the National Maritime Fisheries Museum to be built in Wando.

According to the province on the 5th, the National Maritime Fisheries Museum construction project was selected as a preliminary feasibility study target project by the Ministry of Strategy and Finance's Fiscal Project Evaluation Committee on the same day.

The National Maritime Fisheries Museum is a project with a national budget investment of 144.1 billion KRW. If it passes the preliminary feasibility study this year, it is scheduled to open in 2029 at the Cheonghaejin Historic Site area in Wando.

So far, Jeonnam Province has continuously made proposals to the government and the National Assembly for the construction of the National Maritime Fisheries Museum in the Southwest Coast area. After re-challenging the preliminary feasibility evaluation led by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism last October, it was finally approved.

With the selection as a target project for the Ministry of Strategy and Finance's preliminary feasibility study, the National Maritime Fisheries Museum construction project has finally entered the main track.

Kim Young-rok, Governor of Jeonnam Province, issued a welcoming statement saying, “The selection as a preliminary feasibility study target project is a valuable achievement accomplished with the united efforts of all Jeonnam residents, including the people of Wando County,” and added, “The National Maritime Fisheries Museum will become a maritime and fisheries complex cultural hub showcasing the past, present, and future of Korea’s maritime and fisheries industry, and a representative tourist attraction of the global South Coast marine tourism belt.”

He continued, “We will closely cooperate with the government and Wando County to make thorough preparations so that the final step, passing the preliminary feasibility study, is achieved early,” and requested, “We ask the residents to show great interest and support for the construction of the National Maritime Fisheries Museum befitting Jeonnam’s status as the Clean Sea Capital of Korea.”

The preliminary feasibility study is a procedure to assess the viability of new projects expected to require large-scale fiscal investment by reviewing economic feasibility, regional balanced development, policy effects, and other factors.

The Ministry of Strategy and Finance will begin the full-scale preliminary feasibility study starting in January after completing preliminary procedures such as selecting specialized research institutions. The investigation period typically takes from 9 to a maximum of 12 months, including basic data collection, research, economic feasibility, and policy analysis.
