People Power Party's Lee Man-hee Reveals
Project Cost Estimated at 230 Billion Won
Lee Man-hee, a member of the People Power Party representing Yeongcheon and Cheongdo in Gyeongbuk, announced on the 5th that the Daegu Urban Railway Line 1 Yeongcheon (Geumho) extension project, a metropolitan railway connecting Daegu and Yeongcheon, has passed the preliminary feasibility study conducted by the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
Rep. Lee Man-hee stated, “Large-scale projects aimed at job creation and revitalizing the local economy, such as the Yeongcheon Racecourse Park development project, Yeongcheon High-Tech Park district, and Geumho and Daechang general industrial complexes, are underway. With the military facility protection zone in the Nambudong area lifted last December, allowing the resumption of regional development projects, the Daegu Urban Railway Line 1 Yeongcheon extension project, which strengthens public transportation accessibility to Yeongcheon, has passed the preliminary feasibility study, bringing forward a more advanced future for Yeongcheon.”
The Daegu Urban Railway Line 1 Yeongcheon extension project is a large-scale railway civil engineering project connecting approximately 5.7 km from Gyeongsan Hayang Station to Geumho-eup in Yeongcheon via urban railway, with a total project cost of about 230 billion KRW.
Included in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s ‘4th National Railway Network Construction Plan’ in 2021, the Daegu Line 1 Yeongcheon extension project was selected as a preliminary feasibility study target by the Ministry of Economy and Finance in December 2022. The Korea Development Institute (KDI) began the study in February last year, and after about a year, the project passed the feasibility study.
In particular, the current preliminary feasibility study focuses mainly on economic evaluation, making it relatively disadvantageous for large-scale SOC projects promoted in local areas to pass, with the consensus being that passing the feasibility study is as difficult as “threading a needle.” However, the Daegu Urban Railway Yeongcheon extension project proved its viability by passing the feasibility study on the first attempt.
The Daegu Urban Railway Line 1 Yeongcheon extension project, along with the Yeongcheon Racecourse Park development project, is one of Yeongcheon’s most long-awaited projects and one of the key projects that Rep. Lee Man-hee has actively led over the past four years.
