[AI One-Bite News] OpenAI's Sales Jump 57x, Now Launching AI Store for Buying and Selling AI

OpenAI to Launch GPT Store Next Week

Editor's NoteSince the emergence of ChatGPT, the world has been buzzing with artificial intelligence (AI). Technology is changing rapidly and news is pouring in daily. Even industry experts who are at the top of their game are struggling to keep up. It’s overwhelming to consume everything, but you can’t afford to miss out either. We deliver the core of weekly AI issues, carefully selected and easy to digest.
AI App Store to Open

OpenAI will launch the 'GPT Store' next week. The GPT Store is an AI app store where anyone can trade AI chatbots they have created. Originally, OpenAI announced at its first annual developer conference last November that the GPT Store would be launched soon. However, the release was delayed due to the ousting of CEO Sam Altman. Although the revenue-sharing model for the GPT Store has not been disclosed, it is likely to take a commission from payments, similar to an app store.

With the addition of GPT Store sales, OpenAI’s growth is expected to accelerate. Last year’s annual revenue was $1.6 billion (approximately 2 trillion KRW), which was a staggering 57 times increase compared to 2022. There are projections that this year’s revenue could reach $5 billion (approximately 6.5 trillion KRW), more than triple last year’s figure.

Improving profitability remains a challenge. Operating costs for ChatGPT are substantial. As of the first half of last year, ChatGPT’s daily operating cost was estimated at $700,000 (approximately 900 million KRW). In 2022, it recorded an operating loss of $550 million (approximately 700 billion KRW). Copyright costs for training data are also increasing. According to IT media The Information and others, OpenAI spends up to $5 million (approximately 650 million KRW) annually on news articles used for AI model training. Since The New York Times (NYT) and others have filed copyright lawsuits against OpenAI, related costs are expected to rise further.

Microsoft (MS) is introducing a dedicated 'Copilot' key on Windows-exclusive keyboards that allows users to access AI services. Pressing this key, located next to the spacebar, brings up a sidebar on the right side of the PC screen where users can ask questions or give commands to the AI. For example, when using PowerPoint or Excel, pressing the Copilot key lets users instantly generate and insert desired images or perform data analysis tasks. This is the first major change to the default Windows keyboard layout in about 30 years. Since the Windows key was introduced as a basic key to open the PC’s start page, this is a significant update. Yusuf Mehdi, MS Vice President, said, “About 30 years ago, we introduced the Windows key to enable people worldwide to interact with Windows. Now, as the era of AI on PCs opens, the Copilot key is newly added.”

Google is developing a paid version called 'Bard Advanced.' According to a Google developer’s post on the social networking service 'X,' Bard Advanced is based on Google’s proprietary large language model (LLM) 'Gemini Ultra.' It can solve advanced math problems and has reasoning capabilities. Last month, Google unveiled three models: Gemini Ultra, Pro, and Nano. Among them, the mid-sized and mid-performance 'Gemini Pro' was integrated into the AI chatbot Bard for free. This was a strategic move to distribute a model comparable to OpenAI’s GPT-4, which costs $20 per month, at no charge. Although it was a bid to regain leadership in the generative AI competition, Google appears poised to enter monetization soon.
