The police have referred lawyer Kang Yong-seok and former MBC reporter Kim Se-ui to the prosecution on charges of spreading false information about the son of former Minister of Justice Cho Kuk (defamation under the Information and Communications Network Act).
According to the Gangnam Police Station in Seoul on the 4th, Kang and Kim were referred to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office at the end of last month, and in the case of Kim Yong-ho, the case was closed due to lack of prosecution rights as he passed away in October last year.
In a video posted on the YouTube channel "Garosero Research Institute" (Gaseyeon) on August 22, 2019, they claimed that Cho's son sexually harassed a female student, but the situation was reversed to suggest that former Dongyang University professor Jeong Gyeong-sim was being bullied. Former Minister Cho filed a complaint with the police, stating, "They spread clear false information."
Earlier in 2022, the police referred the case with a recommendation for prosecution, but conducted supplementary investigations at the request of the prosecution. On this day, former Minister Cho said on Facebook, "The prosecution referral was finally made at the end of last year, 3 years and 3 months after the complaint," adding, "It is such a simple case, so I do not understand why it took so much time."
