Research and Development of Solar Panel Recycling Technology and Demonstration Support Facility
Maximizing Business Impact through Carbon Neutral Edu Center and Green Convergence Cluster Integration
Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do announced on the 4th that the Carbon Neutrality (Green Convergence) Cluster Development Project has been finalized as it was reflected in the 2024 government budget.
The Carbon Neutrality Cluster is a full-cycle support facility for research and development and demonstration of recycling technologies for used solar panels, as well as market development. The Ministry of Environment plans to invest a total of 45 billion KRW to establish the cluster on a 34,000㎡ area within the Solar City industrial complex.
The cluster will include R&D (Research and Development) facilities, demonstration testbeds, testing and certification centers, and corporate support facilities.
The Minister of Environment plans to newly designate Haenam-gun as the site for the Green Convergence Cluster Project, starting with the basic planning service this year and aiming for completion by 2028.
As the distribution of solar power generation increases, the amount of used panels is also rapidly rising, with an estimated 6,796 tons of used panels expected nationwide by 2029.
With the establishment of the Carbon Neutrality Cluster, it is expected to build a circular economy by fostering base technologies and industries for recycling and reuse of used solar panels, serving as a stepping stone to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
In particular, a 42.5 billion KRW Carbon Neutrality Edu Center is being promoted within the Solar City industrial complex, with detailed design scheduled to be completed this year and construction to begin in 2025.
With the Carbon Neutrality Edu Center, a national education center for achieving carbon neutrality and future energy transition, and the Green Convergence Cluster being established consecutively, the Solar City industrial complex is expected to become a leading city for carbon neutrality and renewable energy.
County Governor Myeong Hyun-gwan stated, “With the final confirmation of the Carbon Neutrality Cluster Development Project, which has been promoted as part of creating an eco-friendly renewable energy industrial belt, Haenam-gun is expected to rapidly emerge as the number one place for carbon neutrality. We will carry out the project perfectly to approach the goal of realizing Solar City industrial complex as a future-oriented and world-class carbon neutrality city.”
