Han Dong-hoon, Emergency Response Committee Chairman of the People Power Party, visited Gwangju on the 4th and expressed strong support for including the spirit of the May 18 Democratic Uprising in the preamble of the Constitution, prompting Gwangju Mayor Kang Gi-jung to express his gratitude.
Mayor Kang Gi-jung posted on his SNS that day, "Han Dong-hoon, the Emergency Response Committee Chairman who visited Gwangju, supported the inclusion of the May 18 spirit in the constitutional preamble. I am grateful," adding, "It is not too late even now. Let's achieve a one-point constitutional amendment in this general election."
He continued, "Four lawmakers from both ruling and opposition parties?Ha Tae-kyung, Seong Il-jong, Lee Hak-young, and Lee Byung-hoon?have even formed the 'May 18 Spirit Constitutional Preamble Inclusion Promotion Headquarters,'" and said, "Everyone is in favor, and now we request Chairman Han Dong-hoon to take one more decisive step forward."
Earlier, Han Dong-hoon, Emergency Response Committee Chairman of the People Power Party, visited Gwangju, the heart of the opposition, and expressed strong support for including the May 18 spirit in the constitutional preamble.
He said, "I believe the spirit of May 18 precisely aligns with protecting democracy and the spirit of the Constitution," adding, "We will not simply agree to include it in the constitutional preamble but will actively promote it. However, the procedure for amending the Constitution is also important."
He further explained, "Rather than just agreeing, I think including the May 18 spirit will make our Constitution much richer, clearer, and more proud," and said, "We will thoroughly discuss at the party level how to approach this, and our position is not different from our party’s stance so far."
He added, "I and future generations hold gratitude and respect, not a sense of debt or guilt, toward May 18 and the citizens of Gwangju," emphasizing, "I will show this through policies, budgets, and administration while leading the People Power Party."
