The hopeful new year of 2024 has dawned.
On the first day, January 1st, Seoul district mayors held sunrise events to pray for the happiness of their residents, and from the 2nd, they began their official new year duties in earnest.
In particular, on the 2nd, they met with senior citizens and environmental officers to exchange greetings, and also held events to visit the spirits of the deceased to reaffirm their new resolutions.

On the morning of the 2nd, Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo District, visited the Yeongdeungpo branch of the Korea Senior Citizens Association to greet the elderly and share well wishes for the new year.
On this day, Mayor Choi checked on the health and well-being of the seniors and shared the direction of the district administration for the new year.
Especially known as the “Filial Mayor,” Choi, who has visited every senior center in the district since his inauguration as the 8th elected mayor of Yeongdeungpo, promised to improve senior center facilities, enhance the operation of senior job programs, and strengthen support for leisure and cultural activities so that the elderly can enjoy a healthy and vibrant old age.
Mayor Choi Ho-kwon of Yeongdeungpo said, “I deeply appreciate the hard work of the seniors who have contributed to the development of the district,” adding, “I hope the seniors will continue to lend their experience and wisdom for the future of Yeongdeungpo. Following last year, I will continue to play a leading role in senior welfare as the ‘Filial Mayor’ this year as well.”
Seo Gang-seok, Mayor of Songpa District, held a communication luncheon on the 2nd with the building maintenance workers at the district office as the first luncheon meeting of the new year 2024.
Since the launch of the 8th elected administration, Songpa District has been striving to improve the quality of administrative services and trust in district governance through environmental improvements of the district office building, which is the starting point of ‘servant administration.’ Starting with the renovation of the second-floor civil service office in 2022, various efforts such as upgrading aging facilities like elevators and refurbishing the lawn plaza have enhanced visitor convenience and created a comfortable space, receiving positive responses.
Having managed a busy district administration for a year and a half, Mayor Seo held a lunch meeting with 18 staff members from the district office management team to mark the new year. This was an effort to encourage those who have led the environmental improvements within the building, the signal fire of ‘servant administration,’ and to listen to their difficulties.
Park Kang-su, Mayor of Mapo District, visited the ‘Mangwon-dong Environmental Officers’ Rest Area’ at 8 a.m. on the 2nd as his first schedule of the new year.
This visit was conducted to encourage the environmental officers who quietly work on-site to keep Mapo clean.
On this day, Mayor Park Kang-su delivered new year greetings and well wishes to 101 environmental officers who open Mapo’s dawn earlier than anyone else, and handed out hot packs, scarves, and rice as tokens of encouragement.
After encouraging the environmental officers, Mayor Park headed to the Disaster and Safety Situation Room on the basement first floor of Mapo District Office.
The Disaster and Safety Situation Room operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to ensure the safety of Mapo. Mayor Park encouraged the staff who protect the safety of Mapo residents behind the scenes and checked the local safety status.
Mayor Park Kang-su said, “Thanks to your quiet dedication in difficult conditions, we have been able to make Mapo clean and safe,” adding, “In 2024, Mapo District will do its best to create a better working environment for those who work hard behind the scenes.”
Joseongmyeong, Mayor of Gangnam District, Cleans the Streets of Gangnam Station with Sanitation Workers
Jo Seong-myeong, Mayor of Gangnam District, began the first steps of the new year 2024 at the site of public livelihood. He cleaned the streets with 10 sanitation workers at Yeongmyeong-gil near Gangnam Station, listening directly to their voices from the field.
He then volunteered to serve free meals to seniors at the Suseo Comprehensive Social Welfare Center, exchanging new year greetings and well wishes. In addition, he personally checked on major pending tasks on-site. To inspect the Smart Gangnam Dong Office, the first of its kind nationwide, he visited the Gaepo 2-dong Community Center.
He also visited the Suseo-dong 730 Robot Plus Demonstration Development Support Center, scheduled for completion in March next year, to check the progress of construction. After completion, when the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy’s national project contest is fully launched, the district plans to form a consortium with government ministries and robot companies to further activate the robot business. After finishing the on-site schedule, he paid respects at the tomb of Ahn Chang-ho in Dosan Park, reaffirming his initial resolve for the new year.
Ryu Gyeong-gi, Mayor of Jungnang District, visited the tombs of distinguished figures at Mangwoo History and Culture Park at 7:30 a.m. on the 2nd to pay respects and set his aspirations for the new year of Gapjin (2024).
Mayor Ryu visits Mangwoo History and Culture Park every year to commemorate the great figures and honor their spirit, renewing his determination for the new year. This year, he paid tribute with flowers and a moment of silence at the graves of independence activist Yu Gwan-sun and poet Manhae Han Yong-un.
This visit embodied the will to remember the noble dedication and spirit of independence activist Yu Gwan-sun and Manhae Han Yong-un and to widely promote the historical value of Jungnang District.
Mayor Ryu Gyeong-gi said, “This year, I started the new year of Gapjin vigorously at Mangwoo History and Culture Park, where many patriots and modern historical figures who devoted themselves to the country rest in peace,” adding, “In 2024, I will strive to raise the pride of Jungnang residents and make it a source of pride to be a Jungnang resident, working for the happiness of residents and the development of Jungnang District.”
Lee Soon-hee, Mayor of Gangbuk District, Seoul, began her new year duties on the 2nd by paying respects at the National April 19th Democratic Cemetery to mark the Gapjin year (2024).
She visited the National April 19th Democratic Cemetery in Uidong, offering flowers and incense at the April Student Revolution Memorial Tower to honor the spirit of the patriots and war heroes. The ceremony was attended by Mayor Lee and senior officials of grade 4 and above from the district office.
After the visit, Mayor Lee Soon-hee wrote in the guestbook, “I will create a world where people live together with the residents.”
Looking at the first steps of these district mayors in the new year, one can read their determination on how they intend to approach district governance throughout the year.
