Dobong-gu Shares 34 Tons of Kimchi Made with Love to 4,000 Low-Income Households

This year, the kimchi barrels in Dobong-gu were filled with kimchi made with love for neighbors. The varieties ranged from elementary school students’ kimchi to that made by seniors and soldiers. A total of 34 tons of kimchi were delivered to 4,000 households in vulnerable groups within the community, including elderly living alone and single-parent families.

From November, when the kimchi-making season began, kimchi events were held throughout Dobong-gu. On November 14, about 30 residents gathered at the Ssangmun-dong Sharing Garden (Ssangmun-dong 442-1) to make kimchi using napa cabbage and radishes harvested from the eco-friendly sharing garden. Additionally, with napa cabbages sponsored by companies, they made 1,500 kg of kimchi.

A resident who participated in the event said, “It was a special experience to make kimchi with napa cabbage grown directly in the garden. It feels even more meaningful knowing that the kimchi we made will be delivered to neighbors in need.”

On November 27, a kimchi-making event bringing together North Korean defectors, military personnel, and other residents was held at the lawn square of Dobong-gu Office. From early morning, participants busily carried salted napa cabbage and spread seasoning between the leaves.

After about three hours, 280 boxes of 10 kg kimchi were quickly stacked in the square. Volunteers, who became closer while making kimchi, promised, “Let’s do this together again next year.”

Oh Eon-seok, the mayor of Dobong-gu who supported the kimchi-making volunteer work that day, said, “We all became one while making kimchi with hearts full of love for our neighbors,” and added, “Thank you for doing your best in your respective roles.”

News of kimchi-making volunteer work also came from the 6th graders of Seoul Wolcheon Elementary School in Chang 4-dong. On December 6, the volunteer group “Wolcheon Angels,” consisting of about 70 sixth-grade students, made kimchi and personally delivered it to 16 low-income elderly households in the area. A student who participated said, “I was happy to practice sharing with my friends. I will become a great adult and practice even greater sharing in the future.”

By the end of December, a whopping 34 tons of kimchi had been made. This was the weight of love created by the combined sharing efforts of various sectors of society. Oh Eon-seok, mayor of Dobong-gu, said, “I thank everyone for coming together with one heart and one mind to practice sharing in the community. The kimchi made with our warm hearts will be a great support to the households receiving it.”
