The Japanese Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning and advisory following a magnitude 7.6 earthquake, including Dokdo in the affected area, prompting the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to lodge a stern protest with Japan through diplomatic channels.
At a regular briefing on the 2nd, Deputy Spokesperson Lim said, "Regarding this matter, the government has lodged a stern protest with Japan through diplomatic channels and demanded corrective measures."
Deputy Spokesperson Lim emphasized, "Dokdo is clearly our inherent territory historically, geographically, and under international law, and there is no territorial dispute over Dokdo. We will firmly and sternly respond to any unjust claims by Japan regarding Dokdo."
Earlier, the Japanese Meteorological Agency released a map showing tsunami warnings and advisories after a maximum magnitude 7.6 earthquake occurred in the Noto region of Ishikawa Prefecture the previous day, marking Dokdo as a "tsunami advisory" (yellow).
This prompted criticism that the Japanese government was once again repeating unjust territorial claims over Dokdo.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also expressed regret over Japan's Minister for Economic Revitalization, Shindo Yoshitaka, visiting the Yasukuni Shrine, where Class A war criminals from the Pacific War are enshrined, the previous day.
Deputy Spokesperson Lim stated, "Our government expresses deep disappointment and regret over the visit by a Japanese government minister to the Yasukuni Shrine, which glorifies Japan's past aggressive war and enshrines war criminals." The Ministry of Foreign Affairs added that it lodged a stern protest with Japan through diplomatic channels.
