Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Kim Ikang) will be the first in the nation to provide regular monthly allowances to family caregiving adolescents and young adults.
On the 2nd, according to Seo-gu, Mayor Kim Ikang approved the "2024 Family Caregiving Youth Allowance Support Project Plan" as the first task of the year.
Seo-gu will provide 250,000 KRW per month for one year to family caregiving young adults who are responsible for supporting their livelihood while caring for parents or siblings who need care due to disabilities, mental and physical illnesses, or drug-related issues.
The support recipients are family caregiving young adults aged 9 to 39 who have resided in Seo-gu for more than one year according to their resident registration, have an income below 100% of the median standard income, and exclude those receiving livelihood benefits.
Seo-gu will decide on support eligibility by verifying qualifications when applicants apply for the caregiving allowance at their resident registration neighborhood office, and will also build networks with welfare facilities and institutions, education offices and universities, hospitals, and clinics to discover eligible recipients.
An integrated service network will also be established to provide customized services such as forming self-help groups for family caregiving young adults, integrated case management, and public-private cooperation linkage.
Previously, Seo-gu established the basic plan for the family caregiving youth support project, enacted support ordinances, conducted surveys, and held forums last year.
In addition, in November last year, to support family caregiving young adults, about 1,000 local residents participated in the "Oh~itgil" event, walking together along the 5.2 km Gwangju Stream.
Mayor Kim Ikang of Seo-gu said, "We want 'Together Seo-gu' to be a strength so that family caregiving adolescents and young adults can protect their dignity and value as human beings and plan and prepare for a better future," adding, "We will do our best to improve the quality of life for young people and establish a social care network system that leaves no one behind."
