Prosecutors Indict 'Butterless Butterbeer' Company Without Detention

The prosecution has brought charges against the company and its representative who created the 'butterless butter beer.'

On the 2nd, the Seoul Eastern District Prosecutors' Office announced that it had indicted Virtue Company without detention on charges of violating labeling and advertising laws by promoting on social media (SNS) and promotional posters from May 2022 to January 2023 as if butter was used as an ingredient.

Earlier, the Seoul Regional Food and Drug Safety Office filed a criminal complaint against Boulangerie Beurre. "Beurre" means butter in French.

Boulangerie Beurre was sold at popular domestic department store pop-up stores, liquor specialty shops, convenience stores, and at one point experienced a shortage.

A prosecution official stated, “We will do our utmost to maintain the prosecution so that a sentence commensurate with the crime can be handed down.”
