Joint Response to Regional Decline Kwon Hyuk-won, Director of the Job and Economy Bureau of Pohang City (left), and Seo Young-joo, Director of the POSTECH AI Research Institute, visited the briefing room at Pohang City Hall on the 28th to explain a joint response strategy for regional extinction.

On the 28th, Kwon Hyuk-won, Director of the Job and Economy Bureau of Pohang City, and Seo Young-joo, Director of AI Research at POSTECH, visited the briefing room at Pohang City Hall and stated, “The city and the university will share strategies against local extinction and work together collaboratively.”

Pohang City announced that it will steadily build a ‘Digital Innovation Cluster’ through establishing a digital convergence hub, fostering new industries based on digital technology, and nurturing innovative talent in partnership with POSTECH.

In particular, as the first project to realize ‘Digital National Service’ next year, Pohang City will focus its capabilities on designating the Gyeongbuk Digital Innovation Hub, a project it is putting great effort into.

Director Kwon emphasized, “Science and technology, the source of digital creation, is the solution to the local era led by Pohang. We plan to boldly implement various projects to draw the blueprint of digital transformation and leap forward as a sacred place of advanced science and technology in the local era.”

He also stated that by sharing POSTECH’s global network and strategies to counter local extinction, which serve as one pillar in defending Pohang’s local collapse line, they will open a local era centered on Pohang.

Seo Young-joo, Director of AI Research at POSTECH, said, “Since President Kim Sung-geun’s inauguration last September, POSTECH has stood at a new starting line with ‘POSTECH 2.0,’ a second founding. Like the relationship between Carnegie Mellon University and Pittsburgh, or Stanford and Silicon Valley in the U.S., POSTECH carries a heavy responsibility for Pohang’s future.”

He further explained that the digital and software industries could become the region’s new blue chips, and proposed projects promoted by POSTECH and Pohang City, upcoming public contest projects planned for next year, and plans for establishing the Pohang AI Innovation Cluster.

Regarding recent news articles distributed by LH Corporation about the POSTECH and Hanam Gyosan New Town ‘AI Innovation Cluster’ project, Director Seo clarified, “It involves a consortium including prestigious overseas universities and numerous domestic universities and companies, and POSTECH is considering participating as one pillar in program operation,” dispelling misunderstandings.

Director Seo also stated, “POSTECH will continue to strive to become the best campus in Korea by securing top domestic and international faculty and improving infrastructure and living conditions.”

He reiterated that, centered on POSTECH, they will walk together with the local community to make Pohang a global city attracting core talent and advanced industries.

To realize ‘Digital National Service,’ following battery national service and bio national service, Pohang City established the ‘Digital Convergence Industry Division’ through an organizational restructuring in July this year and is discovering new digital transformation projects based on new technologies and expanding the digital industry ecosystem.
