Goheung-gun Accelerates Building a Population Base of 100,000 through Large-Scale National Projects Attraction

All-Out Efforts for the Change and Development of Goheung through Multiple National Projects Acquisition

Gohung-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Gong Yeong-min) announced on the 28th that results are emerging in attracting large-scale national projects aimed at achieving the local government goal of the 8th term, "Establishing a foundation for a population of 100,000 in 10 years."

Gong Yeong-min, the governor of Gohung-gun and a former official of the Ministry of Strategy and Finance, set the top priority as attracting "national projects" directly implemented by the government, moving beyond simple national and provincial subsidy projects, and pushed forward with proposal activities ahead of the government budget formulation schedule.

As a result, the 2023 government budget included 300 million KRW for preliminary planning research for the Gwangju-Gohung (Naro Space Center) highway and expressway (5.9 trillion KRW) to drastically improve Gohung-gun’s biggest weakness, transportation infrastructure. Following the successful launch of Nuriho and the nationwide interest in the space industry, 500 million KRW was allocated for planning and research of the Space Launch Vehicle Science Complex (budget undecided), a project to transform the Naro Space Center area in Gohung into a complex cultural space comparable to the U.S. Kennedy Space Center.

Additionally, for the first time since the establishment of Gohung-gun, a national industrial complex was attracted, securing 400 million KRW for basic planning and feasibility study of the Space Launch Vehicle National Industrial Complex (380 billion KRW), and 500 million KRW was additionally allocated for basic and detailed design of the Fishing Vessel Construction Support Center (40 billion KRW) to systematically develop the fishing vessel construction business.

The government budget proposal for this year also reflected 3.5 billion KRW for basic and detailed design for the exemption of preliminary feasibility study for the Gohung Space Launch Vehicle Industry Cluster, the county’s largest project, and the establishment of core infrastructure for the space industry (budget undecided). Furthermore, 200 million KRW was added for research on the establishment of national forest welfare infrastructure in the Palyongsan area (budget undecided), and 500 million KRW for the creation of the Marianne and Margaret Global Leader Training Hub Space (budget undecided).

In particular, the national forest welfare infrastructure project in the Palyongsan area is a large-scale national project with a budget exceeding 100 billion KRW, expected to become a signature recreational site that will mark a milestone in the history of Korean forestry beyond Gohung-gun.

Gohung-gun has begun preparations for securing national and provincial funds for 2025 next year and plans to focus administrative efforts on achieving two goals simultaneously: the smooth promotion of national projects and the attraction of national projects.

Governor Gong Yeong-min said, "Attracting large-scale national projects is the key to the change and development of Gohung-gun," adding, "We will not be satisfied with this year’s achievements and will work hard together with all public officials to establish the foundation for a population of 100,000 in 10 years, which is my campaign pledge."
