Seongdong-gu Introduces Smart Crowd Management System for Year-End and New Year Period Seongsu Station Crowd Map Kiosk

Seongdong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jung Won-oh) is introducing a smart crowd management system to ensure the safety of crowds in Seongsu-dong during the year-end and New Year period.

The smart crowd management system detects crowd situations in real time around the Seongsu-dong cafe street area and informs residents of the crowd status through crowd kiosks and electronic display boards installed at the entrances of Seongsu Station and alleyways.

Previously, the district applied crowd detection functions to 60 closed-circuit televisions (CCTV) around the Seongsu-dong cafe street area. This system automatically detects crowd density and alerts for warning signs through CCTV, measuring the number of people per unit area (persons/㎡). When crowding is detected, the information is transmitted and shared with the Seongdong-gu Disaster Safety Situation Room, as well as Seoul City, fire stations, and police stations.

The crowd density measured by these intelligent CCTVs is displayed in real time on the crowd kiosks and electronic display boards. Seongdong-gu has installed kiosks at two locations, exits 3 and 4 of Seongsu Station, where anyone can easily check the crowd density status in the Seongsu-dong area, preventing crowd-related accidents for the first time nationwide.

Additionally, five electronic display boards have been installed in total around the Seongsu-dong cafe street and Yeonmujang-gil area. The display boards warn of danger and guide detours when crowd density increases in the front alleyways. When pedestrian congestion reaches a caution level (5 persons per unit area), it is displayed in yellow, and when congestion reaches a crowded level (6 persons per unit area), it is displayed in red letters to guide detours.

Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, stated, “As many people gather during the year-end and New Year period, raising residents’ safety awareness is most important to prevent crowd accidents. We will create a safe Seongdong-gu by sharing real-time crowd status with residents through the smart crowd management system.”
