Successful Renovation of Aging Signs at Factories and Shops Along Gyeongin-ro from 2020 to 2023... 700 Million Won Budget, Divided into 3 Zones... Enhanced Sign Design, Readability, and Aesthetics... Storytelling-Type 'Guide Signs' Installed... Creating a Pleasant Environment and Improving Urban Scenery
Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that approximately 250 signboards in the Gyeongin-ro area have been newly transformed.
The Gyeongin-ro area (from Mullae-dong Intersection to Dorimgyo Intersection, both directions for 1 km) is the last remaining hub of traditional industries and a concentrated area for machinery and metal in Seoul. It is characterized by old buildings and aging factories scattered throughout, with heavy vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
Accordingly, from 2020 to 2023, the district promoted a signboard improvement project targeting factories and shops in the Gyeongin-ro area. With a budget of about 700 million KRW, signboards that damaged the urban landscape or threatened residents' safety were successfully renovated.
The district recruited and selected businesses for the signboard improvement project and sequentially refurbished old signboards. The newly installed signboards feature designs tailored to the characteristics of each business, significantly enhancing readability and aesthetics compared to before.
The renovation sections include three zones: ▲ Dorimgyo Intersection to the entrance of the Fruit and Vegetable Market ▲ Mullae-dong Intersection to Mullae Park Intersection ▲ the railway line of Dorim-ro Line 2 to the railway line of Dorimcheon-ro Line 1.
Additionally, when replacing signboards, the district linked the project with streetscape improvement efforts, carrying out environmental enhancements such as repainting and cleaning the exterior walls of aging buildings. Various violations, including signboard specifications, were thoroughly addressed.
Meanwhile, storytelling-type “information signs” reflecting Mullae-dong’s manufacturing history and the craftsmanship spirit of small business owners were also produced, harmonizing with the surrounding environment. The information signs are 5-meter-tall vertical sculptures featuring graphic icons symbolizing steel, machinery, and metal, providing a comprehensive view of Mullae-dong. These signs were installed at the Mullae Park intersection and in front of the GS gas station at Mullae-dong Intersection, with internal lighting allowing for nighttime viewing.
In the future, the district plans to promote a pedestrian environment improvement project in the Gyeongin-ro area, creating a culturally specialized street that highlights the characteristics of Mullae-dong and enhances the local image.
Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, stated, “The Gyeongin-ro area is densely packed with old small factories and shops. Through the recent signboard improvement project, we have created a pleasant streetscape and enhanced the urban aesthetics. We will continue to make every effort to transform the Gyeongin-ro area into a street frequently visited by residents.”
