Gyeongbuk Office of Education Wins 2 Grand Prizes and 1 Encouragement Award in 'School Meal Excellence Contest'

Gyeongbuk Office of Education (Superintendent Lim Jong-sik) won two grand prizes and one encouragement award at the ‘2023 School Meal Excellence Contest’ jointly hosted by the Ministry of Education and 17 metropolitan and provincial offices of education, and organized by the Korea Education Environment Protection Agency.


The School Meal Excellence Contest has been promoted by the Ministry of Education since 2015 to discover and spread excellent cases of meal operation and policy implementation in kindergartens, schools, and education (support) offices, aiming to provide healthy meals and create a better dietary environment.

Following two grand prizes in 2022 (Gyeongbuk Office of Education, Gwanho Elementary School), this year Gyeongbuk Office of Education again won two grand prizes (Gyeongbuk Office of Education, Gumi Bonggok Elementary School) and Cheongdo Dongsan Elementary School received one encouragement award, producing the highest number of excellent cases nationwide.


A total of about 60 entries were submitted nationwide for this contest, with 14 final winners receiving the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Award, among which three awards were won by the Gyeongbuk Office of Education.


The Gyeongbuk Office of Education received the grand prize for a convergent education case by operating the ‘Gyeongbuk Student Health Festival’ event through the collaboration of the meal service, physical education, and health departments.


Gumi Bonggok Elementary School received the grand prize for an excellent case addressing nutritional imbalance titled ‘Individual and Group Nutrition Counseling Using AI (Artificial Intelligence)’ focusing on dietary education.


Cheongdo Dongsan Elementary School received the encouragement award for an excellent case presentation titled ‘Various Experiences and Career Education through Student Club Activities.’


The 14 selected excellent cases will be promoted to the 17 metropolitan and provincial offices of education and the public through case presentations and video production.


The Gyeongbuk Office of Education’s excellent case, ‘Gyeongbuk Student Health Festival,’ was also presented as an excellent case at the online training for nationwide parent school meal policy monitoring groups and meal service officers of metropolitan and provincial offices of education.


Lim Jong-sik, Superintendent of Gyeongbuk Office of Education, said, “The Gyeongbuk Office of Education has made great efforts in various ways for school meals, and as a result, achieved good outcomes this time.” He added, “We will spare no support in hygiene and nutrition management for more hygienic and healthy school meals in the future, and ask for greater effort and interest so that many excellent cases can emerge,” expressing gratitude and a request.
