“I woke up to a world covered in white snow?a white Christmas. It feels great to greet my first Christmas morning after my promotion.”
This was the Christmas morning sentiment shared by Mr. A, head of the press team in a Seoul district office.
Mr. A received the great gift of a grade 5 promotion at the end of this year. Having served as the press team leader in the district for three years, he says this gift brings him more joy than anything else.
However, from early morning, Mr. A rushed out to the scene of a large fire in the area.
It is the fate of a press team leader. Whether good or bad news occurs, rushing to the scene has become a habit.
Among the 25 press team leaders in Seoul’s district offices at year-end, five were honored with a grade 5 promotion. The protagonists are press team leaders Kim Sang-hee of Jongno-gu, Yoo Soo-yeon of Jung-gu, Nam Baek-hyun of Yeongdeungpo-gu, Hwang Hyun-jun of Gangbuk-gu, and Kim Dong-jin of Dobong-gu.
The promotion rate was as high as 20%. It is a considerable proportion.
In the era of elected local governments, press work holds a very important role. Since the heads of local governments are elected officials, public relations work has become a crucial position. As a result, the door to promotion has widened.
Also, the press team leaders endured many hardships during their 1 to 3 years of service. When the institution head faced difficulties, they exerted considerable effort to logically defend them.
However, the sense of fulfillment was also great. Promoting the administration created by their department brought a rewarding feeling.
They also confessed that it was a lively field where they could learn a lot.
These promoted officials started as grade 9 public servants and, after about 30 years of hard work, finally became heads of district office departments. Authority comes with responsibility.
